A Story of Water, Will and Renewal across Rural Uttar Pradesh

By: Art of Living-Social Projects on 18th November 2025

Drive through the countryside of Uttar Pradesh today, and you’ll notice something different. Wells that once stood dry now shimmer with water. Fields that lay cracked under the sun are lush again. Farmers who once looked to the skies for mercy now look to their land with confidence.

This transformation is the work of The Art of Living Social Projects, guided by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar - a people-led effort that’s rebuilding ecosystems, replenishing groundwater, and bringing vitality back to the soul of rural life.

Between Flood and Famine: A Land Finds Its Balance

For decades, farmers in western Uttar Pradesh lived on a knife’s edge - trapped between the floods of monsoon and the famine of summer.

In Ladaura Narayanpur of Chamraua block, fields once stayed waterlogged for weeks. A few kilometres away, others dug wells as deep as 130 feet, only to find dust instead of water.

Breaking this punishing cycle became the mission of The Art of Living Social Projects, which partnered with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and visionary corporate collaborators to combine modern hydro-engineering with community participation. The result: reduced floods, recharged aquifers, and restored livelihoods.

This vision has already guided the rejuvenation of 72 rivers and tributaries, touching the lives of 3.4 crore people across 20,000 villages in India.

Engineering Miracles Beneath the Surface

In Rampur district, the change is visible - and measurable. Over 100 villages now benefit from 300 recharge shafts, 132 ponds, 15 injection wells, and a sub surface dyke - an engineering feat once thought impossible in the region’s alluvial plains.

Using geophysical surveys, engineers mapped underground clay layers beneath the Kosi tributaries and constructed a barrier of perforated PVC pipes and cement slurry. This slowed underground water flow, allowing rainwater to seep into aquifers instead of draining away.

The impact is clear:

What was once unthinkable has become a model of efficiency and collaboration, thanks to the dedication of the Art of Living Social Projects team.

Bundelkhand Reborn: The River Revati Flows Again

In Bundelkhand’s rugged terrain, where drought and flood have long battled for dominance, The Art of Living Social Projects’ water work has turned despair into renewal.

With support from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Ashirvad Pipes, and local administrations, teams have built 238 recharge structures across Lalitpur district. Government data shows groundwater levels rising by 5 to 6 feet in parts of Birdha block. The most inspiring milestone is the revival of the Revati River - once forgotten, now flowing again through six gram panchayats.

What began in 2022 with just two recharge shafts has now grown into 246 structures, restoring both the water table and the spirit of the community. Farmers are also moving away from water-guzzling eucalyptus trees and planting native neem and jamun, improving both soil health and biodiversity.

Changing Mindsets, Transforming Landscapes

Real change takes root in people - and the land follows

Over 16,000 villagers have attended Jal Jagrukta Shivir (Water Awareness Camps), discovering how everyday habits affect water sustainability. In Magermau, Rampur, a pond revived through recharge shafts now sustains cattle and crops year-round - a simple but powerful shift in local life.

This blend of science, community participation, and compassion has drawn recognition from both the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Rural Development.

A Model of Collective Will and Compassion

For regions long resigned to drought and despair, these projects have brought something priceless - faith. Faith that the land can heal. Faith that people can rebuild together. Faith that when compassion and science come together, miracles flow naturally.

The Art of Living Social Projects’ water rejuvenation mission now stands as a scalable model for India’s water security - one that unites technology with trust, and innovation with inner inspiration.
